Wisconsin Archery

What's new for the  2010 deer season.

• Antlerless deer harvest is not allowed by most hunters in 18 regular deer management units and Council Grounds State Park. Archery and gun antlerless deer carcass tags will not be valid in the following units: 7, 13, 28, 29A, 29B, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 49A, 52 and 52A. No bonus antlerless tags will be available in these units. See pages 11-12 for exceptions for certain disabled hunting permit holders, Armed Forces members, and first year hunter education graduates.

• There will be no earn-a-buck requirements in management units outside the CWD Management Zone. The only units that have Earn-a-Buck regulations in 2010 are units inside the CWD Management Zone.

• There is no longer a three day waiting period to use archery licenses purchased during the open season.

• A proposal to remove the restriction on telescopic sights on muzzleloaders during the 10 day muzzleloader only season may be in effect this fall. Please check with the DNR before hunting during this season.

• A rule has been proposed to allow hunters to divide a deer into as many as five pieces prior to registration to facilitate removal of the carcass from the field and may be in effect this fall. Contact the DNR prior to the deer season for details.

• The use of rifles for firearm deer hunting is now legal: in all of Dunn County, west of highway J in the southwest corner of Shawano County, and all of Hartman Creek State Park. See map on page 19.

• A nine day firearm deer season has been established at both Whitefish Dunes State Park and Potawatomi State Parks in Door County.

• Non-residents 65 years and older may use a crossbow for hunting with the appropriate hunting license without a special permit authorizing its use, the same as residents age 65 or older.

• Bonus unit-specific antlerless tags for regular units with a quota and state parks will go on sale on the following schedule: - Saturday, Aug. 21, starting at noon: All odd-numbered regular DMUs. - Sunday, Aug. 22, starting at noon: All even-numbered regular DMUs. - Beginning Monday, Aug. 23: All unsold even- and odd-numbered regular DMUs.

• 4 Day Antlerless Only Deer Hunts—there will be a 4-day antlerless only deer hunt on October 14–17 in all herd control and CWD units. There will be a December 9-12 antlerless only hunt for all units statewide (including those units north of Hwy. 8) except state park units and non-quota areas. See pages 28–29 for DMU map. A valid antlerless deer carcass tag is required.

• Two-Day Youth Gun Deer Hunt Oct. 9–10—The two-day hunt is held in all units statewide except state park units and non-quota areas. See page 40.
